The Story of New Zealand Ancient Kauri

The giant Kauri tree is the most famous New Zealand native tree and one of the largest trees found anywhere in the world. Ancestors of today’s Kauri date back to the Jurassic or Permian period (230 million years ago). Living kauri trees have been found as old as 4,000 years old with heights up to 150 feet and girth of 60 feet!
The timber from these magnificent Kauri trees was extremely valuable and most was exported to European countries. Today New Zealand legislation prohibits the felling of any growing Kauri tree.
Huge logs buried for thousands of years
Thousands of years ago a huge natural disaster caused many Kauri forests to be flattened and the trees to be buried in swamps. The wood was perfectly preserved and radiocarbon dating has revealed that some of this wood has been buried for up to 50,000 years.
The extraction process
Natural Wood Creations extracts huge Kauri logs and stumps from swamp areas around Northland, where massive Kauri forests once stood. These magnificent logs and stumps contain wood that is spectacular in colour and form.
The team at the Kauri Clock factory breathes life into these relics of the past creating a unique range of handcrafted items. The clocks, mirrors, frames & other crafts are all made to the highest quality, ever appreciating in value and are a must to see.
